Restful sleep: It's required
Sleep is considered the basis of good health. Good sleep is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Even so, a recent survey by the National Sleep Foundation on adult sleep patterns reported that nearly two-thirds of American adults (62%) experience sleep problems a few nights a week or more. Simply put, sleep problems have reached epidemic proportions and it’s having an impact on our overall health.
In today’s fast-paced world we are overstressed, we spend one-third of our lives in bed — 20 percent less time sleeping than we did a century ago. We spend the eight hours each night that we should be sleeping chronically awake. Poor sleep is related to the chronic fatigue, and stress most people experience on a day-to-day basis, and it’s even been shown to be a contributing factor in the obesity epidemic. Poor sleep has physical and mental consequences. And the problem in how well we sleep lies not only in how much we are sleeping, but in what we are sleeping on as well. |
